Overview

Beatrice is a Chrome extension that helps you search and chat with your bookmarks using AI. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how we handle your data.

Data We Collect

When you use Beatrice, we collect and process:

  • Bookmark Data: URLs and titles of bookmarks you choose to sync. We fetch the content of these URLs to enable semantic search.
  • Chat Messages: Questions you ask and the AI responses, stored to maintain conversation history within your session.
  • Anonymous User ID: A randomly generated identifier (UUID) stored locally in your browser to associate your data. This is not linked to any personal information.

We do not collect:

  • Your name, email, or any personal identifiers
  • Browsing history beyond synced bookmarks
  • Cookies for tracking or advertising
  • Data from other browser extensions

How We Use Your Data

Your data is used solely to provide the Beatrice service:

  • Semantic Search: Bookmark content is processed into embeddings (numerical representations) to enable meaning-based search.
  • AI Chat: Your questions and relevant bookmark context are sent to OpenAI's API to generate responses.
  • Conversation History: Recent messages are retained to provide context for follow-up questions within a chat session.

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • OpenAI: Processes chat queries and generates embeddings for search. Your bookmark content and chat messages are sent to OpenAI's API. See OpenAI's Privacy Policy.

We do not sell your data to any third parties. We do not use your data for advertising.

Data Storage & Security

  • All data is transmitted over HTTPS (encrypted in transit)
  • Bookmark embeddings are stored in a vector database on our servers
  • Your anonymous user ID is stored locally in Chrome's extension storage
  • Chat history is stored server-side and associated with your anonymous ID

Data Retention

  • Bookmark data is retained until you delete it or uninstall the extension
  • Chat history is retained for the duration of your use of the service
  • You can delete all your data at any time through the extension settings

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access: View what bookmarks are synced through the extension
  • Delete: Remove all your data using the "Delete My Data" option in the extension settings. This permanently removes all bookmarks, embeddings, and chat history associated with your anonymous ID.
  • Portability: Your bookmark data originates from Chrome's built-in bookmark manager, which you control.

GDPR Rights (EU Users)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):

  • Legal Basis: We process your data based on your explicit consent, which you provide when accepting the privacy policy before first use.
  • Right to Access: You may request a copy of all data we hold about you.
  • Right to Rectification: You may request correction of inaccurate data.
  • Right to Erasure: You may delete all your data using the "Delete My Data" button in Settings, or by contacting us.
  • Right to Data Portability: You may request an export of your data in a machine-readable format by contacting us.
  • Right to Withdraw Consent: You may withdraw consent at any time by deleting your data and uninstalling the extension.
  • Right to Lodge a Complaint: You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Chrome Web Store User Data Policy

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Specifically:

  • We only request permissions necessary for the extension's functionality (bookmarks, storage)
  • We use bookmark data solely to provide the AI search and chat features
  • We do not use your data for purposes unrelated to the extension's core functionality
  • We do not transfer your data to third parties except as necessary to provide the service (OpenAI for AI processing)

Children's Privacy

Beatrice is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes through the extension or our website.
